[Greek] ἐκκλείω (ekkleiō), [Latin] excludere, [German] fernhalten: to shut out, to exclude, to eliminate, to not allow; Rom.3:27, Gal.4:17

 

 

Background information:

Greek Hellenism: This term means to shut out, to exclude from, to hinder, and to prevent.

Euripides’ Orestes 1127: “We will shut them up in different parts of the house.”

Herodotus’ The Histories 1.144: “The Dorians forbid admitting any of the neighboring Dorians to the Triopian temple, and even barred them from using it those of their own group who had broken the temple law.”

Demosthenes On the False Embassy 19.26: “You were precluded from learning the truth promptly and being cheated by hopes, impostures, and vain reassurances.”

New Testament: This term means to not allow and to exclude. In regard to faith, there is no occasion for boasting. People cannot boast of their faith, since it is God’s free gift. Paul states that evil doers want to isolate you from your blessings, so that you may show interest in them.

Scripture:

Rom.3:27: “What occasion is there for boasting? It is ruled out. On what principle that of works? No, rather on the principle of faith.” (People cannot boast of their holiness, achievements, or status. Salvation is a gift from God, not from human effort or merit. Works can be a manifestation of faith. A faith without works is a dead faith.)

Gal.4:17: “They show interest in you, but not in a good way; they want to isolate you, so that you may show interest in them.” (Paul had become like an enemy to the Galatians. The Galatians were being influenced by Judaizers undermining Paul’s authority. Evildoers wanted to isolate them from God’s blessings.)

1. The Judaizers, Jewish Christians, insisted that the Gentiles must adhere to Jewish law.
2. The zeal was not for the Galatians’ spiritual well-being, for rather for the Judaizers’ own agenda.
3. This highlight the misguided enthusiasm which can lead believers away from the truth of the Gospel.
4. Paul warns of false apostles who disguise themselves as servants of righteousness.
5. The ultimate goal of the Judaizers is to win the Galatians’ allegiance, but not to Christ.
6. This reflects a broader biblical warning against idolatry and allegiance to anything other than God.

Mt.23:13: “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You lock the kingdom of heaven before human beings. You do not enter yourselves, nor do you allow entrance to those trying to enter.”

1. This illustrates the scribes’ and Pharisees’ refusal and inability to exercise their authority and teaching power.
2. The scribes and Pharisees have the key (control and access to the knowledge of heaven).
3. The scribes and Pharisee reject Jesus by refusing to state the the right interpretation of the prophecies of the Messiah.
4. They teach human traditions and false doctrines of the Messiah.
5. They teach that Jesus was an imposter. They restrict the truth of Jesus.
6. They discourage the preaching of the gospel.

Lk.4:25: “There were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land.”

 

Etymology: The related Greek noun ekklesia means a particular body or whole body of faithful people. Essentially, these people are called out.

Update:

Stealth Arianism: believing that Jesus is God, but excluding God by their own actions.

1. The Arian heresy was rooted in the belief that Jesus Christ was merely a created being.
2. Modernism, the heresy of our times, quite often views Jesus Christ as merely an historical figure.
3. Modernism is related to practical atheism, which is paying lip service to Jesus Christ and the Church’s teachings.
4. Religion is often reduced to one’s lived experiences. Teachings are muddled, ambiguous, inclusive for purposes of pastoral sensitivity.
