[Greek] ἐπιτρέπω (epitrepō), [Latin] exire, [French] sortir, [French] partir, [Latin] permittere, [Latin] dimittere, [French] dispenser [French] admettre, [Latin] mittere, [French] jeter, [French] catapulter: to allow, to permit, to entrust, to let; Mt.8:21,31, Mt.19:8, Mk.5:13, Mk.10:4, Lk.8:32, Lk.9:59,61, Jn.19:38, Acts 21:39-40, Acts 26:1, Acts 27:3, Acts 28:16, 1Cor.14:34, 1Cor.16:7, 1Tim.2:12, Heb.6:3

We now currently live in a secular post-Christian world of tolerance and false compassion. In contrast, Jesus, who went to sinners, did not tolerate sinful behavior. He said to sin no more!

Background information:

Greek Hellenism: This term means to yield to, to permit, to let, to leave to, to indulge, and to rely upon.

Homer’s Odyssey 2.226: “To Mento, Odysseus had given all his house in charge.”

Homer’s Odyssey 22.289: “But leave the matter to the gods, since they are are far mightier.”

Homer’s Iliad 21.473: “And to Poseidon you have utterly yielded the victory, and given him glory for naught!”

Aristophanes’ Plutus 1079: “With anyone but you I should not be so easy.”

Plato’s Euthyphro 5e: “That this is established and right and that we ought not to let him who acts impiously go unpunished.”

Plato’s Charmides 171e: “Nor should be we permit others under our governance to do anything but what likely to do right.”

Old Testament: This term means to loosen to relinquish, to permit, to forsake, and to abandon.

New Testament: This term means to permit and to allow. A disciple asked Jesus if He would allow him to bury his father. The demons asked Jesus to send them into a herd of swine. Moses allowed for divorce because of the hardness of their hearts. Pilate permitted Joseph of Arimethea to bury Jesus’ body. Paul was given permission to speak for himself. Paul was allowed to live by himself in prison. The women were not allowed to speak in places where men held authority.

Noteworthy scripture:

Mk.10:4-5: Moses permitted him to write a bill of divorce and dismiss her. Moses wrote this because of the hardness of your hearts. **

Lk.6:61: I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home. **

Jn.19:38: Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate if he could remove Jesus’ body

Acts 21:39: I [Paul] request you to permit me to speak to the people

Acts 27:3: Julius was kind enough to allow Paul [in prison] to visit his friends

1Cor.14:34: Women should keep silent in the church

**Jesus’ firmness toward His disciples: Jesus however proclaims of the permanence of the divine intent for marriage. God created mankind in His own image: male and female (Gen.1:24). Man and woman become one flesh (Gen.2:24). In following Him, one must look forward with a full resolve in the work of God. One cannot look back with regret or with attachment to worldly concerns. (Lk.9:62). A plowman can only do his work well if he moves forward. True compassion is based on an ordered moral order.

Perspectives on tolerance:

“Tolerance is not a Christian value. Tolerating grave evil within a society is itself a form of serious evil.” Archbishop Chaput

“Tolerance applies only to persons, but never to principles. Intolerance apply to principles, but never to persons.” Bishop Fulton Sheen

“Christian love bears evil, but he does not tolerate it.” Bishop Fulton Sheen

“We do not want a church that moves with the world. We want a church that moves the world.” GK Chesterton

“Tolerance is the virtue of the man without convictions” GK Chesteron

“The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.” George Orwell

“In a time of deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” George Orwell

“Societies are far gone in depravity when toleration is considered a good in itself, without regard to the thing tolerated.” GK Chesterton

Christ did not come to make us nice people (men). He came to make us new people (men). Bishop Fulton Sheen

Etymology: The Greek verb epitrepo means to change or turn (-trepo) to (epi-).

Conclusion:

Permit, permission, admit, admission, mission, catapult, exit, sort, part, dispense, reject, rejection, sortie, resort

It was commonly thought that the gods controlled one’s fate and destiny.

The Old Testament conveys the notion of abandoning, forsaking, renouncing, and giving up. It is as if God was treating the people of the Old Testament like adolescents, lowering the bar for moral conduct. Then Jesus comes along and says, “You now need to act like grown-ups and act accordingly.” Jesus raises the bar in referring back to God’s intended design for marriage.

According to God, man should leave his father and mother and join with his wife in one flesh.

In order to follow Him, one must not look back in focusing on worldly concerns.

It must be acknowledged that there existed a patriarchal system in the early Church were the men presided in society.

Update: Our society has now allowed such hubris as to being able to redefine marriage, to disrupt the life creation process (abortion), and to change and redefine sex/gender. (All of these elements pertain to God’s domain.)

This current secular post-Christian (and woke society) has now tolerated hormone blockers and gender reassignment surgery. Even parents are allowing their children to transition!

It is important not to allow others to deny and obliterate one’s understanding of our country. (Orwell was very prophetic about the 1619 project, cancel culture, and others’ naive understanding of history.)

The false compassion of equity racial justice has elevated criminals’ rights and concerns over victims and society. As a result, we have rampant crime.

Many citizens, who who reelect the same liberal politicians, inevitably allow and permit the continuation of failed liberal policies.

Many in our society seem to have now allowed and tolerated the right to protest (and to be offended) over the right to present opposing views. (Stanford University)

Catholics and Christians who do not accept or tolerate others’ values (and behaviors) are now often being perceived as intolerant, hateful, and extreme. (Those who accuse others of being intolerant are actually the ones who are being intolerant!)

Anglican Deacon Calvin Robinson dares to speak the truth about marriage. As a result, he becomes cancelled by the Church of England who cannot tolerate this truth.

If you assume that Catholics and Christians are intolerant, hateful, and extreme, they get their moral belief systems from God. Taking this notion to its inevitable conclusion, then one must conclude that God is intolerant, hateful, and extreme! (Good luck with supporting this view!)

The Vatican leadership is attempting to change worship and liturgy to adapt to the modern world. Instead, they are dis-enfranchising and disappointing the faithful.

In Argentina, Church leaders are now incorporating pagan influences in the Mass.

Many churches and some of the Catholic hierarchy, seeking to be inclusive, are actually showing false compassion towards others. They are either tolerating or failing to call out sinful and intrinsically disordered behavior and lifestyles.

Luxembourg Cardinal Hollerich says that for some it is impossible to be chaste. We can only charge people with moral conduct they can bear in the world. (Can you say false compassion?)

Several church leaders are seeking to change church doctrine and church practices in order to accommodate to the modern world.

**“Neither do I condemn you, Go and from now on do no sin any more.” Jn.8:11

Jesus was called to come to sinners. But He did not tolerate sinful behavior. Jesus exercised true compassion based on God’s moral order. He said to sin no more!

We now need leaders and shepherds that show true compassion in pointing out what is right and wrong. Someone’s eternal (spiritual) welfare could be at stake!

At the end of the day (or our day), we will have some explaining to do before God!

“A person in authority who deprives his subjects of the truth when he says, even with the best intention of helping them, ‘You may ignore the teachings of the Magisterium: God’s laws are too hard for you.’ By that he says in effect, ‘You are not and never will be strong and good enough to adhere to these laws.” Catholic psychiatrist Conrad Baars

Sounds like false compassion to me!
