[Greek] ἐνέχω (enechō), [Latin] insidiare, [Latin] iugare, [French] joinder: to hold (a grudge), to be hostile towards, to be under control; Mk. 6:19, Lk.11:53, Gal.5:1

St. Augustine make reference that one can become a slave (being held captive) to sin or addiction.
Background information:
Greek Hellenism: This term means to hold fast, to harbor a grudge, to be entangled, to be caught, to pierce, to be seized with wonder, to be liable, and to come to a standstill.
Epictetus: “If someone succeeds in provoking you, realize that your mind is complicit in this provocation.”
Plato’s Leches 183e: “As he was fighting, his scythe fixed to his spear somehow stuck into the ship’s rigging, holding fast.”
Euripides’ Iphigenia in Aulis 527: “True, he is enslaved by the love of popularity, a fearful evil.”
Herodotus’ The Histories 7.128: “Great wonder took him when he came and viewed the mouth of the Penesu rivers.”
Plato’s Laws 9.881d: “He that fails to drive him off shall be liable by law to the curse of Zeus.”
Old Testament: This term means to pursue, to be entangled, to be guilty, to keep close, and to shut up.
New Testament: This term means to hold a grudge, to be hostile, to be under the control of.
Mk.6:19: “Herodias harbored a grudge against him [John the Baptist] and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so.” (Herod imprisoned John the Baptist because he feared that his influence over the people might lead to a rebellion. Yet Herod, knowing that John the Baptist was a righteous and holy, liked to listen to him.)
Lk.11:53: “When He left, the scribes and Pharisees began to act with hostility toward Him and to interrogate Him about many things.” Jesus denounced them because:
Pharisees:
- They focus on external cleaning rituals.
- They are filled inside with hate and plunder.
- They pay tithes of mint and rue, yet they pay no attention to judgment and love of God.
- They love honor in the synagogues and marketplaces, yet are like unseen graves (outward piety masking inward impurity).
Scholars:
- They impose hard burdens others, yet do not help them.
- They build memorials of prophets whom their ancestors killed, yet they bear witness and consent to their ancestors.
- They take away the key of knowledge and block others who seek it.
Gal.5:1: “For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery.” (Paul points out that one continues under the yoke of slavery under the law and circumcision.)
New Testament concept of freedom: Man attains self-control by letting himself be controlled by God. God provides a true liberation (freedom) from a deficient existence. (Talk about a profound contradiction!! One becomes totally free by being controlled by God. This sounds life following God’s will.) #GodIsInControl #Mindblown
Modern concept of freedom: “I can do anything I want!” This notion of freedom can often result in being enslaved or addicted to some sinful activity or overindulgence. This can become a false sense of freedom.
Overcoming the modern Church practices causing confusion for the Novus Order Mass: [Traditional vs. Modern perspectives on altar servers (boys an
- One must be honest in understanding why the Novus Order Mass continues to have sparse attendance by Catholics.
- One must be honest in understanding why the Tradition Latin Mass (where still allowed) continues to thrive.
- One must be honest in understanding that Tradition does not mean being discrimination and exclusion to the sexes.
- One must be be honest in why the Church continues to struggle with priestly vocations.
- How is young boy ever going to consider a priestly vocation when he sees an altar girl at Mass?
- How is it helpful that a young girl, seeking an altar girl at Mass, have her hopes crushed realizing that she cannot become a priest. This cannot be possible in that the male priest represents the male Christ.
- One must understand that with Tradition, males and females each have their own unique dignity, vocation, and identity in the Church. Yet, modern viewpoints seek to redefine the Church according to modern standards but with Tradition.
- One must understand that Modern perspectives have produced the sparsely attended Novus Order Mass. Why is this????
- One must and should reconsider modern perspectives and go back to Tradition.

The Greek philosopher Epictetus foresaw the psychological notion of a person “living rent-free” in someone’s mind.
Update: Many continue today to have TDS (Trump Derangement Syndrome)
At the 2026 Consistory, Cardinal Roche, holding on to his efforts to suppress the TLM, sent a letter to the Cardinals to make a rationale for this efforts.
Many Catholics (clergy and laity) were disappointed in that the 2026 Consistory did not hold discussion about the liturgy and the TLM. The focus was more on Synodality. Shocker!
Minnesota governor Waltz and Minnesota mayor Frey continue to hold on to their hostility to the federal government. Now these two officials are under federal investigation for their inflammatory statements. Shocker!
Bishop Athanasius Schneider has argued that the NO Mass and liturgy must be reformed. He warned that Vatican II has fueled doctrinal ambiguity and confusion. The Church need to get rid of the notion of altar girls. This will provide greater clarity for young boys who are considering the priesthood. This will remove confusion that girls would not have a path for becoming priests.
Bishop Schneider also criticizes Pope Leo for holding up Vatican II as the guiding star of the Church. Pope Leo seeking to elevate Vatican II which has been a cause of great pastoral and spiritual disaster for the Church. The guiding star of the Church is Jesus Christ!
At Vatican II, it was naively thought that it was necessary for the Church to “bring in fresh air into the Church” so that the Church “can get with the times.” However, this created a pastoral and spiritual disaster for the Church.
Synodality: holding on the idea of a worldly Church made in the image of man and his lived experiences.
Tradition: holding on the idea that Tradition provides true reform and renewal. The thriving TLM perfectly illustrates this notion.
It can be said that many of us may be enslaved or addicted to notoriety, fame, likes, narcissism, social media, wealth, sweets, and sinful activity.
We often anecdotally hear of those certain people who have may sold their soul to the devil for worldly acclaim. It perhaps happen more than we realize.
Sanctuary city madness: we are constantly seeing protesters (citizens, politicians, and politicians) obstructing ICE’s effort to remove illegals and criminals from these cities. They are protesting against removing criminals from the cities.
Many abortion supporters are resentful now that Roe vs. Wade has been overturned at the federal level. There is no longer a federal right to have an abortion. They are saying, “how dare they take this right to kill my baby away from me.”!
“It is the part of a wise man to resist pleasures, but of a foolish man to be a slave to them.” Epictetus
“If you wish, you can become a slave of passions, and if you wish, you can remain free and not submit to their yoke, for God has created you with that power.” St. Anthony the Great
“Hanging onto resentment is letting someone you despise live rent-free in your head.” Ann Landers
